Hornby Trains

All aboard the Hornby Trains express. Welcome to the mecca of model train sets. Not too many things as a youngster or adult capture the imagination quite like Hornby train sets do. Model trains have been around for over a century. But few manufacturers of these marvelous creations have. Hornby is one of those that has. And Hornby enthusiasts of all ages ensure they will not be going way side any time soon either. There is just something soothing about watching one of the Hornby trains chugging down the tracks that you cannot often experience anywhere else, let alone in another type of hobby. But where did this all start at?

Hornby gets the name from, well Frank Hornby. This crafty lad was responsible for modeling the first Meccano construction toy back in 1901. Good luck finding one of these original pieces though. All the same, the manufacturer has since been a leading producer of full scale train sets ever since. Although, the toy maker has seen its share of other names. Initially it was a trade name under Meccano for railways. Then in 1938, Meccano released the first 00 gauge trains, and coined it under Hornby Dublo. This name stuck until the early 60s when a buyout in 1964 resulted in the merged name of Tri-ang Hornby. But it was a short marriage before the model maker became Hornby Railways. And finally settling on the name Hornby Hobbies by 1980. As you can see, the train maker’s list of names are also a train length. Pun intended.

One thing that has stayed consistent throughout the years, is that Hornby railways in one shape form or fashion, has been offering exciting train sets at affordable prices. Whether it’s a Flying Scotsman or a London 2012 that toot your whistle, Hornby train sets have grown into quite a pleasure from hobbyist. The options for the sets really run the gamut here as well: scenic, lighting, Hornby track, buildings, bridges and people, are just a scratch off the surface. No matter what name you choose to call it by, the manufacturer has been in the business of producing quality Hornby track and trains for more than a century now.
